Stroud’s bustling community of 47,000 sits on the western edge of the Cotswold hills to the south of Gloucester and Cheltenham where five valleys meet. The steeply sloped streets reflect a town that has survived well without national chain store dominance.
The town serves fourteen nearby communities with independent shops and cafés which provide the shopper with a diverse retail range which is unique for a town of its size. The success of the small businesses has resulted in a number of national outlets being attracted into the town centre recently which has become more and more popular over the years. Each Saturday the Stroud Farmers Market also attracts large numbers of shoppers and has won the Best Food Market award at the BBC Food & Farming Awards 2010.
The town is also well known for it’s artistic roots and hosts many festivals including The Stroud Fringe, the Walking Festival, Food Festival in September and the Vintage Fashion, Textile and Accessories Festival in May. The Subscription Rooms in the heart of the town centre provide a venue for entertainment and nearby, Stratford Park has a leisure centre, indoor and outdoor swimming pools and a museum of history and culture. Stroud is listed in the The Great Town Awards of 2010 due to its strong identity, vibrant local economy and community spirit.
